The Long, Hot Summer

I'm sure you can understand and sympathize when I say I have not enjoyed this summer because of the unbearably hot and humid weather we've had to endure.

I've planted and replanted flower beds and urns two or three times, trying to find some variety of flowering plants that wouldn't cower and shrivel under the relentless rays of the sun.

Some of you may remember the beautiful Bougainvillea I planted in May.

Well, it has been on what I call "death row" for several weeks now, and, I'm sad to say, finally succumbed to the heat yesterday.

After I took that picture, I put it out of its misery and set it out for the trash people to carry away this morning.

The sun-loving Lantana I planted in my urns didn't fare much better ...

And our watermelon Crape Myrtles have suffered, too, producing only a few faded, sparse blooms ...

... in comparison to the profusion of flowers they usually have this time of year.

Variegated Jasmine, May 16th ...

Same Jasmine plant on August 5th ...

Isn't that sad!

After digging up and replacing withered flowers a couple of times, I finally decided to just "go green," and bought two large Asparagus Ferns for my urns and some variegated Liriope for the flower bed around our waterfall area.

So far, they're doing well and I hope to keep them healthy enough to be able to save them over the winter.

Ahhh ... doesn't the word "winter" sound wonderful! I'm sure come January, we'll all be wishing for some of this August heat, but wouldn't it be nice if we could have just one winter day in August!

Good morning Janie, I'm so tired of this summer. I don't think I've ever experienced one like this one in all of my years..
My flowers that are planted in the ground really are taking a beating.
The ones I have planted in pots do get a drink from the hose and look half way decent..
I'm sorry you've lost so many of your beautiful flowers.. I hope Harry has not flown to cooler climates..:o)
Hold on, Fall is on the way..
Blessings, Charlotte

It has been a rough summer for all of us. I can't believe your lantana pooped out! Good idea with the asparagus fern.

Yes, Janie, I think most of the country can sympathize with your feelings. Here in the Midwest the heat has been relentless. But I'm holding on....for I know cooler days are not too far off.
I too, was very disappointed in my lantana this year. I thought it would be able to withstand the heat....but alas it has failed me.
I don't know about WINTER...but I'll sure take a little 'fall' :)

I'm surprised about the demise of the bougainvillea because it's a hardy and reliable bloomer here in super hot south Texas (San Antonio). Hopefully cooler weather isn't too far away.

I guess we're having a bit of a different summer here in the panhandle of Florida. Rain, rain, rain. I just heard two people may have been hit by lightning this morning! Frightening. We really needed the rain as we've had drought conditions for so long but it's getting to be a bit much.

Hi Janie, I am sorry to see your flowers haven't done as well as you hoped they would. The weather has really played havoc on veggie gardens as well. Though we have been blessed to of had a wet season, just very hot and humid. Asparagus ferns are great and they do well in any kind of weather, I told dh that just might be what I place in our hanging baskets next season. Your winter photos sure look inviting, and yes I am sure I will be complaining come winter about the weather, isn't it funny when we are in one season we are always looking at he next one. For me right now I am so looking forward to Fall! ~smile~
Enjoy your week,
Hugs,
Sue
