Blue Dayflowers

I would like to thank Sally, our gracious Blue Monday hostess, at Smiling Sally for giving us an opportunity to share some of the blues around us. Be sure and visit Sally to see her elegant cobalt pitcher, which was a 51st wedding anniversary gift from her husband. I was in Canton, Mississippi on a photo shoot last week and was standing on a curb photographing a church across the street, when I happened to look down and saw some of the sweetest little blue flowers growing out of cracks in the pavement. I couldn't resist capturing them with my camera and want to share them with you today. At first, I thought they might be some kind of violet, but upon "googling" blue wildflowers, I discovered that they belong to the Spiderwort family, and are an "invasive plant" ... aka a weed. Their common name is Asiatic Dayflower, and they are usually found along roadsides and waste places from June to October. As the common name indicates, the plant was introduced from Asia, and each little flower lasts only a day. I'm so glad I noticed them and, weed or not, I think their delicate little blooms are lovely, don't you? Best wishes to you for a very happy Blue Monday.
