Taking Chance

I recently watched the movie Taking Chance, and was so deeply affected by it that I'd like to share it with those of you who haven't seen it.

Based on "real-life" events, the movie features Kevin Bacon portraying Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a volunteer military escort officer, who accompanies the body of 19-year-old Marine Private First Class Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming. Although PFC Phelps had been a Marine for less than a year, he had already earned six ribbons.

PFC Chance Phelps

July 14, 1984 – April 9, 2004

The Defense Department banned virtually all media coverage of deceased vets returning home since the 1991 Gulf War until April 2009. But the military offered advice and assistance, providing Taking Chance's film crew with a rarely viewed, but painstakingly accurate, account of the care and protocol bestowed upon the nation's fallen warriors. The respect, dignity, and tender loving care given the deceased soldiers on their final journey home brought tears to my eyes and filled my heart with pride.

I commend the creators of this outstanding film, and Kevin Bacon should be recognized for his reverent, dignified, and most respectful portrayal of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl.

This is a photo of the real Lt. Col. Strobl ...

I wish every American could see this moving and awe-inspiring movie that reminds us of the real cost of our freedom. May God bless the families of our fallen warriors and the dedicated men and women who escort them home.
