Fresh from the Oven


I made a second batch of my Sourdough Bread yesterday and baked it last night. It tasted even better than my first two loaves,*** and was so pretty I couldn't resist taking a picture of it.

I wish I could send a loaf to all of you, my sweet blogging friends. Thank you for taking the time to visit me. I sincerely appreciate the kind and gracious comments you leave for me.

Your smooth golden loaf is laid upon the simple cloth, surrounded by the blossoms of Autumn---how many times has that picture been composed in kitchens and on tables and altars in the history of Mankind?

The pristine lines of your loaf lasted only the shutter-snap. It was laid onto a platter, the long breadknife wielded with the pomp of a nobleman's sword, and as the velvety slices fell beneath the knife, the yeasty aroma old as time filled the kitchen.

The steaming cushions were laid with their golden knobs of butter, a smooth smear to cover, and that first warm buttery bite, holding comfort right there in your hand. That's a rite so complex in its simplicity and so rare in the NOW---the simple pleasures of baking bread, and breaking it with family and friends.

Welcome and beauty and nourishment in the work of your hands.

That is one nice looking loaf of bread! You do have my mailing address?? J/K! I went through my breadmaking/domestic stage some years ago and once it was over it was over! Besides, my bread never looked that good!
