Sweet Magnolias

One of the first things we southerners think of as a symbol of "hospitality," is the magnolia blossom, especially here in Mississippi where it is our state flower.

I love everything about magnolias -- their elegant creamy white petals, heavenly scent, rich shiny green leaves -- and think they are beautiful in all stages of their life cycle.

Magnolias are probably the most photographed flower in the South, and, naturally, I have quite a collection of magnolia photos which I took during my photo shoot ramblings in and around Vicksburg.

I have created a slide show of my favorite magnolias, and would like to share it today. Be sure you have your sound turned up if you'd like to hear the music ("Amazing Grace").

I'm looking forward to when the magnolias bloom again, and hope to capture some unique close-up shots with my new macro lens.

Awesome photographs! I also read your blog every day but rarely comment.

Is it just me? I associate Amazing Grace, especially with bagpipes, with funerals. So the music made me very sad.

Casey Ann: "Amazing Grace" is one of my favorite hymns and I find it uplifting.

I think magnolias are one of God's most glorious works of art, and "amazing grace" seems to describe them perfectly.

Thank you for this beautiful post on a dreary day in North Carolina. I share your love for the beautiful magnolias. I am amazed at how large some of the trees are. I pass one on my way to work that is wider than the house it sits next to.

Years ago, Mr. Magpie and I had a HUGE magnolia in our yard with the most beautiful shape. It is still one of the prettiest I've ever seen. I miss it SO much. We have the smaller variety now, and I love the way they smell. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photography, Janie.

XO,

Sheila :-)
