Architectural Lagniappe: Columns

I love photographing architectural columns, and have accumulated quite a collection of pictures taken during my ramblings. When I was gathering some of my favorites to feature in this post, I was surprised by the variety of styles that caught my attention through the years, ranging from very primitive to stately and ornate.

I guess if I had to choose my favorite columns, it would have to be Windsor Ruins at Port Gibson, Mississippi (you can click on the link to read the story of Windsor).

Can you imagine how glorious those were when Windsor was completed in 1861!

My next favorite are the columns of the Old Court House Museum in Vicksburg.

Vicksburg is a photographer's treasure trove when it comes to historical architecture, and here are just a few of the columns I've captured during my photo shoots here at home.

"Shabby Italianate"
Beck House, ca. 1875

Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad Station

Old Sisters of Mercy Hospital

Lakemont, ca. 1830

John D. Cobb House, ca. 1830

Balfour House, ca. 1835

Columns come in all styles, shapes, and sizes. There are tall columns ...

Tuscan Columns — Port Gibson, MS, ca. 1904

Short, shabby columns — Edwards, MS

Greek Corinthian Columns — Natchez

Primitive Columns — Learned, MS

And even OLIVE GREEN columns — Belhaven, Jackson, MS

There are many more columns gracing historical buildings and houses in Vicksburg that I want to capture with my camera, but they will have to wait until Spring, or perhaps this summer when the Crape Myrtles and Magnolias are blooming.

Now, wouldn't that be wonderful lagniappe!

It's been almost a year since our visit to Vicksburg & Natchez and I can't wait to return.

I think the Windsor Ruins are one of my all time favorite places to see....just an awesome place and a little bit haunting in its quietness and presence, but magnificent all the same.

Hope you are staying warm!

Thank you so much for this post. I love columns as much as I love your fantastic photography! The graphic I created for my husband's business cards was the capital of an Ionic column. These photos are magical. Thanks for the escape.

I love all of the old building and different styles of columns that you can find when you just take the time to look. Your shots are lovely as always. I can't wait for this weather to change so we can get out and ramble again.

Where is the rest of the building where there are just columns left, Windsor? What happened to it?

I bet my family is related to Port Gibson, since our Gibsons are from Mississippi. I'd love to know who settled that town.

Do you ever join Outdoor Wednesday?
