Vicksburg Old Court House Flea Market and Fall Festival

I've looked forward to today for a long time and it's finally here -- Vicksburg's 26th Annual Old Court House Flea Market and Downtown Fall Festival.

It starts at 8:00 this morning and my daughter Whitney, my 3-year-old granddaughter Avery, and I are going to go explore the 130 flea market booths set up around the Old Courthouse Museum.

It's always a fun day for the whole family with carnival food treats, live entertainment, great sidewalk sales with participating downtown businesses, and lots of children's activities.

Just Rambling ... A Visit to Two Flea Markets and an Antique Mall

This is a follow up to my recent post about the "Old House Depot" architectural salvage warehouse. Before I visited it, I went to a couple of my favorite places to browse for antiques and flea market treasures.

My first stop was at a large flea market called Highway 49 South Antiques and Flea Market, which is in Florence, Mississippi, about ten miles south of Jackson.

This building connects to another flea market called Magnolia Flea Market, which is even larger. So, there's actually two huge buildings filled with all kinds of good stuff, and you only have to make one stop! Does it get any better than that?

I can't remember ever going here without buying something, and I found two treasures this time, which I will share later in this post.

But first, I'd like to "ramble with you through the mall" and show you some things I thought were pretty ... or unique ... or that I would have bought if I had a place for them.

Like this elegant little aqua dresser with its pretty framed mirror ...

This old vase reminded me of Italian pieces, but I was surprised to see a Japan mark on the bottom. It was in perfect condition except for some crazing, which I think makes it even more desirable ...
Isn't it pretty! I can't believe I didn't buy it, and I'm probably going to go back next week and get it. I just hate it when I get "wishy washy" about buying something and go back to get it later and it's gone. I hope that won't be the case this time, 'cause I really want that vase!

I like these bright floral prints and think they would be pretty in a sunroom or on a covered porch ...

And speaking of "precious," is this not the sweetest little bench you've ever seen! I'd love it for my little granddaughter Avery Grace, but there's just not room for it in her room ...

Catnap, anyone?
When I walked into this booth, I said, "Hello, kitty cat!" ... then noticed that his ears or tail didn't move. As I got closer to him, I realized that he wasn't real and hoped no one heard me talking to him. I can't believe how real he looked, though!

I love this beautiful picture which looks like a reverse glass painting. It was hanging up high and I really couldn't get close enough to tell ...

This is a little oil painting on canvas of two little Amish girls ...

I think this elegant desk is so unique. I've never seen one with an ornate base like that and wonder if it's original to the desk. Also, notice the two little drawers on the sides ...

As I mentioned earlier, I bought two pieces at the flea market and I'm so pleased with both of them.

I didn't hesitate at all when I saw this unique little brass and wood box. I knew it would be perfect on the table beside my husband's chair in our bedroom ...

I could also picture this precious little gilt cherub with its onyx base on a table in my living room ... and I just love it!

One thing I've discovered while rambling through junk shops, flea markets, antique malls, and upscale antique shops is that my taste varies as much as the merchandise you will find in these places. While I am drawn to ornate Italian, French, and European accessories, I also find myself attracted to "country," rustic, and primitive pieces, too.

The next place I stopped during my visit to Jackson, was the High Street Antique Mall (another one of my favorite places). Although the temperature was flirting with 100 that day and I felt wilted, the adrenaline started pumping when I walked in the door at High Street. So many pretty things everywhere I looked!

Another Trash to Treasure Story ...

I love old prints and lithographs, especially in frames without glass, and this one caught my eye in a "junk shop" next door to our cleaners. It had water spots and scratches and was covered with grime, but I love the picture and the frame was in good condition, so I asked the shop owner if he would take $5.00 for it. He said he would today, and I started to ask him if he'd take $2.00 for it tomorrow, but I didn't. I gave him my $5.00, and brought it home, cleaned it, then wiped the print and the frame with Old English Scratch Cover for Dark Wood. I'm pleased with the way it turned out and here it is in its new home (one of our guest bedrooms) ...
