A "Christmas Chain" Tradition ...

Last Christmas my granddaughter Avery (who was two at the time) and I made a paper chain for our Christmas tree. I used heavy construction papers in pastel pink, green, and white and cut them into strips about an inch-and-a-half wide by about 9" long, and Avery and I glued them together to make our chain. I wrote the date on one of the links and we hung the chain on the tree ...

Avery was so pleased with it, and I decided we would start a new tradition and add to our chain every Christmas.

I was a little smarter this year and used double-sided scrapbook paper for our chain. I also bought some Elmer's Washable School Glue which is great to use with little ones. It's purple and in stick form and is easy to wash off hands and doesn't stain clothes.

Avery loved the gluing part and did several links by herself ...

We got a little carried away and our
chain ended up being about 15 feet long!

Next year we won't make it quite that long, and I'm going to
use Christmas scrapbook paper instead of pastels.

Next, we linked the two chains
together and hung them on the tree ...

Ta-daaaaa!

What started out as just a fun project, has become a tradition for Avery and me ... and I look forward to adding to our Christmas chains for many Christmases to come.

Little ones do love to make paper chains. I taught pre-school forever and they would make them for any holiday. The longer the better.

Your home is absolutely breath taking!

We do this in our archway for each holiday. It's a wide arch & really needs something--like antique pilars, in my opinion... My kids love to make them over & over, which works well & I don't have to store the chains each year. I don't have space & they always come out crumpled the next time!

I love Avery's haircut. How I wish my "raised-pentacostal" husband would agree to a short cut for our girls!

Janie,
Everything looks so lovely! Avery is so precious and you see her excitement. It is a wonderful tradition and will always remain a beautiful Christmas memory in heart. These traditions I am finding with our little ones are the moments which bind us all together. They can't wait for the times together where traditons are involved and they seem to almost 'own' the moment.
Your decor is really beautiful!

Precious! And such a good idea and tradition for Avery! She's a little angel, Janie. And I love how she looks so into her craft! :-) I did this last year in St. Augustine, and it was fun. Haven't done it in a number of years, and Mr. Magpie helped and had fun, too! My mother and I used to do this, so it's fun to see you doing this with your grandbaby! :-)

XO,

Sheila

I remember one Christmas when my granddaughter was about that age, we all went on a little road trip. To keep Caitlin busy on the road, she and I sat clear in the back of the van together and made paper chains for their tree. She always remembers that day; and now wants me to always sit in the back with her. Now that she is almost a teenager, we sit and talk about all kinds of things in the car!! Those type of memories are beginning for you. Sally

Janie, the true beauty of your amazing decorations is in the love you have given Avery by teaching her the meaning of "tradition" and learning to help create something beautiful with her own little hands. John Dewey's basic theory of education was that children learn by doing. Avery is so blessed to have you for a guide and teacher and nurturing her along life's path. Once again I am very impressed by the way you express your love for your family by doing beautiful projects.
