Update on House Adventure

Things are moving along on our house-building adventure ... and so much faster than we ever imagined!

If you missed my A Creek Runs Through It post in which I told how all of this came about, you can click on the link to catch up, if you'd like.

Last weekend, the surveyor was at the lot doing the survey, and we marked and measured all the trees over 8" in diameter so he could include them in his survey report. The largest tree we measured is this 48" oak tree, which is probably around 200 years old! I wish I had gotten a closeup of the trunk, but will do that another time.

We've already received the survey report which will help in siting the house on the lot, and in many other ways, too.

On Monday of this week, we hired an architect to draw our house plans for us! We thought this would take some time because the architect is instrumental in bringing our visions of our house to life in the plans. He came highly recommended, and we were very impressed after meeting with him. He has already sent us some preliminary drawings and we are thrilled with most of them. Of course, there will probably be many changes before we have a finished set of plans, but being able to communicate easily with the architect will make it a pleasant experience.

I'd like to share a picture of one of the highlights of our day at the lot last Saturday. The surveyor was walking in the creek bed and came within two feet of this precious little fawn, which was lying in some grasses in the creek bed (you can click on the picture to see it a little closer).

Avery said it must be a girl because it was so cute, and promptly named her Rosie.

The surveyor said Rosie's mama must have put her there and told her to stay until she came back for her. We stood on the edge of the creek bed watching her for about ten minutes and she did not move a muscle. I hope that's not the last we see of Rosie, and hope we see her mama sometime, too.

I learned a very valuable lesson that day. I didn't have my zoom lens with me and those are the closest shots I could get of the fawn because I didn't want to scare her. You can be sure I'll never leave home again without all of my camera gear.

From time to time, I'll be sharing updates on how things are progressing on the house and site preparations, but will try not to bore you with a play-by-play description and pictures. I'm sure I'll be posting about some of the decorating and design decisions I'll have to make along the way, but, hopefully, that will be the fun part.

Thanks for much for your visit. That's a big project, building a new home. Just tires me out thinking about it. But I'm sure my husband and I are a lot older than you two. Good luck with the project. And I do hope Rosie and her Momma stick around, there must b e Poppa someplace.

Exiting times!

I am so glad to hear that you found a good architect, gives such a project a more manageable dimension.
