Decorating for Fall with Stained Gourds

One of my favorite Fall decorating accessories is gourds. They are inexpensive, come in all shapes and sizes, and can be stained or painted to complement any style decor. Here are a few ways I use mine:

On the mantel of our fireplace ...

The Welsh Dresser in our breakfast area ...

A few closeup vignettes of the shelves:

If you would like to read more about how to stain gourds, you can read a post I wrote a couple of years ago called Stained Gourds: A Fall Decorating Project. It's fun, inexpensive, and you'll be surprised by how many other accessories, besides gourds, you can update for your Fall decorating projects ... just with a can of stain (like plain, inexpensive terra cotta pots, which I plan to try soon).

Happy decorating!

Good morning Janie, your posts always inspire me! I remember the post about the gourds, and need to try that this year.

Your home is beautiful...thanks for sharing with us! :)

I love how you decorate with gourds. We had a surprise plant come up in the garden this year and DH thought it was a squash in with the okra so he left it till it got big and we were so suprised to find a stripped gourd plant..with 6 beautiful gourds on it. I have them drying plan to use them in my Fall outdoor decorations in Oct.

Simply perfect, as always, Janie, and it seems that your taste is my taste (even if I don't think of it til I've seen yours).

The pear-shaped one on the top left is just so graceful and shining---do they last year-to-year?

I know there's an immense dipper-gourd somewhere here in the house---about four feet or so, with a huge hollowed receptacle. And I hope to have some more next year---promised by our Fair-going friends, as we picked up lots of seeds at OUR fair for them a couple of weeks ago.

You whole house just has a serenity and a restful welcome which are just natural to it.

(And I know how much work that takes, as well).

We have a saying here in this part of Texas: "He or She is as dumb as a gourd!"

I'm going to have to change that since seeing your "graceful, gourdgeous gourds!" ;-)

think I'll say something like: "My goodness! She's as pretty as a Fall gourd..."

Love those pics!! ;-)

I am impressed! I can just not get in the mood to put 'fall' out in my house, yet. I got all the summer stuff down, but everything is quite bare!

But, yours looks great! Love the mantle...and the hutch!

HI, Janie, it all looks beautiful! I'm not quite in the mood yet either, but I hope to get a few things up in a couple weeks.

Love your Welsh cupboard, it is a stunning piece.
